List of Yakuza drama
Whenever I search for any new drama, the first thing I search for
is a yakuza (japanese mafia A.K.A Yakuza) based one but unfortunately, there
aren't many yakuza drama out there that are funny and worth your time. I tried
to include the ones that are actually entertaining and not filled with blood
and gore.
1.Gokusen: (seasons 1,2 and
3)
Its quite natural that when its
yakuza, its Gokusen. Though it does not actually depict how yakuza actually
live, its pretty popular owing to its amazingly superb performance of Yamaguchi
Kumiko courtesy of Nakama yukie. It was also the drama that catapulted stars
like Oguri shun, Matsumoto Jun, Kazuya Kamenashi among several others into
stardom.
Story/plot:
Its about a woman named
Yamaguchi Kumiko a descendant of the fierce yakuza family Oedo whose prime aim
in life is to become a teacher. She ultimately becomes one but surprisingly to
a class full of delinquents. Coming from a mafia background, Yamaguchi is well
versed in martial arts but she's prohibited from revealing her background to
anyone in the school as she might lose her job. However, when her students are
in trouble, she's not afraid to bring out her real nature and fights against
all odds. Eventually, the story follows on how Yamaguchi changes everyone in
her class and really shows how an IDEAL TEACHER should be like.
Things to look out for: Students calling yamaguchi
'yankumi', the episode where Shin goes to Yamaguchi's house.
2. Great teacher Onizuka:
This drama was such a rage that
almost every drama fan must have seen at least one episode of it. Spanning 2
seasons, this drama is a perfect example of how one's life can change with the
right guidance.
Story/plot:
Its probably genetic that
everyone from a mafia background wants to be a teacher? Here we have Onizuka an
ex-gang member who sets out to become a teacher after earning his degree from a
second rate college. After getting a job from a quirky principal, he realizes
that teaching isn't so easy as his class is filled with the WORST kind of kids
ever who may even resort to blackmailing and bullying to get their job done but
not to worry coz Onizuka uses his unorthodox methods to set 'em all right.
Things to look out for:
Poison 'ost', Onizuka's crazy
antics.
3. My boss, My Hero:
There comes a time in your life
when you realize that all those years you have wasted in school are
costing you dearly. This drama shows one such guy who's all grown up and all
but he goes to back to school to start with the basics. Everything's fine....
EXCEPT he's a YAKUZA!
Story/plot:
Sakaki Makio A.K.A ''Tornado''
is really a tornado when it comes to fighting but is pretty much dumb at
everything else. His father makes him re-join school in an attempt to make
Makio fit and intelligent to be the yakuza head but things aren't so easy for
Makio as his temper gets in the way and his underlings always try to establish
Makio's greatness by printing yakuza symbols all over his uniform. (There is a
korean version movie if you wish to see)
Things to look out for:
THE PUDDING CHASE!
4. Ninkyo helper:
While randomly searching for a
drama on dramcrazy, I came across this. Drawn by the title, I watched the drama
and it was the best thing I had ever done. It is not as popular as the other
drama mentioned in this post but it is a hell of a drama. It gives you a much
more comprehensive outlook of how yakuza work and it is super fun to watch. You
should get some tissues ready if you decide to watch this one though!
Story/plot:
Tsubasa hikoichi a yakuza
underling gets a chance to be the head (Kumicho) of the family when his boss
dies. He gets put in a race along with other underlings to fight for the
position.... but the place where the battle takes place is tad ridiculous..... An
elderly care facility! Watch how Tsubasa transitions from a hardcore
fighter to a real helper.
Things to look out for:
Tsubasa's HAREM! AND his
interactions with a little kid <3
Gonna edit this post when I
come across some more!
